Archaeological Test Excavation was undertaken on a site at Cosmona, Loughrea, Co. Galway. The site covers an area of approximately 2.5ha. The geophysical survey was undertaken by B. Korfanty in June 2025 under licence 25R0202 followed by the licensed archaeological test excavation undertaken on 5-6 of August 2025 under excavation licence 25E0653 issued to Aidan O Connell.
A total of 8 test trenches, 718 linear meters, of test trenches were excavated. The exposed subsoil varied between locations; in trenches T1 and T2 the subsoil consisted of a compact blue clay with lime bedrock just under the topsoil. In trenches T3-T5 the subsoil consisted of a mixture of blue heavy clay and orangeish silty-clay with frequent medium stones. In trenches T7 and T8 the subsoil consisted of dark grey silty clay. The trenches varied in depth from 0.3m to 0.6m. Small amounts of modern pottery fragments were observed distributed randomly within the topsoil across the site. Trenches 7 and 8 were shortened, allowing safe clearance from overhead ESB lines.
The areas of magnetic trends 1 and 2 were not discernible within the excavated trenches.
No archaeological sites, features or finds were discovered during works.
