The archaeological pre-development testing at the proposed development site in the townland of Castlegar consisted of 5 test trenches. Three test trenches were excavated in the north part of the site where excavations revealed the sod and topsoil overlying the natural light brown grey gritty silt. Agricultural furrows were recorded in Trenches A and B and the remains of an east-west running field boundary was revealed in Trenches A, B and C. This feature is marked on the historic OSi mapping. A stoney fill deposit and a circular dark brown clay feature were revealed in the north end of Trench C. These would appear to be associated with land reclamation works in the last two centuries. Excavation of the test trenches D and E in the southern end of the development revealed the sod and topsoil overlying the natural stoney gritty silt. No features and/or finds of archaeological significance were revealed during the course of the archaeological pre-development testing.
