2025:125 - Cullairbaun, Athenry, Galway

The proposed development site is located at Cullairbaun, Athenry, Co. Galway. The proposed works comprise the erection of a modular classroom, and all associated works and site works. The works are located within GA084-001–, the historic town of Athenry.

The monitoring was carried out in response to a planning condition. Fulltime archaeological monitoring of initial site investigation work on 29 April 2025 was followed by fulltime monitoring of excavations on 3 and 4 June 2025. The stratigraphy was consistent throughout consisting of tarmac to a depth of roughly 300mm throughout the site overlying a loose mid-brown, sandy gravel deposit with frequent inclusions of medium to large stones and rubble. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
