2025:081 - Swan Gate Street, Athenry, Galway

The site is located at Swan Gate Street, Athenry, Co. Galway. The works comprised the resurfacing of Old Church Street/Swan Gate Street and the installation of 30m of storm water pipe works to alleviate localised flooding at eight different locations. The works are located within GA084-001–, the historic town of Athenry.

Full time archaeological monitoring of the work was undertaken commencing January 2025. The drainage works were completed on 7 February 2025 with follow-up site inspections of additional site works carried out in February 2025-

The stratigraphy was consistent throughout consisting of tarmac and road fill to a depth of roughly 300mm throughout the site overlying a compact mid-brown, sandy deposit with frequent inclusions of medium to large stones and rubble. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
