Archaeological monitoring took place of conservation works at St Mary’s Graveyard, Crumlin, Dublin 12. A Section 12 Notification was submitted for these works (NM08190). The conservation of the outer graveyard walls was funded by the Community Monuments Fund (CMF). It follows a conservation plan in 2023 that recorded a late medieval residential tower and repairs to the facades and roofs to the vestry and chancel in 2024.

The 2025 works were designed to address issues in a section of the graveyard boundary wall to the southwest and prevent further deterioration of the wall which adjoins the public footpath. Inappropriate repairs have been made in the past using concrete blocks and sand and cement mortar. The ground level inside the church enclosure is higher than the level of the surrounding footpath. There is a bulge visible in this section of the wall below a previous concrete repair which is leaning into the graveyard. Following inspection of this problematic section of wall by the CMF conservation team it was concluded a 2.5m area of wall should be rebuilt from pavement level, using new stone to match existing instead of the concrete. Pointing repairs to cracks and areas where mortar has been washed out would be carried out adjacent to the repair, and the coping on top of the wall would also be repaired in this area.
