| Archaeological excavation was undertaken between 12 and 31 May 2025. The location of the permitted works comprises an area of greenfield and trees nestled between residential estates and Terenure Badminton Centre at the north-eastern extent. Templeville Road is located to the south-western extent. The current path of the River Poddle runs along the northern perimeter of the site. The site is located in the townlands of Templeogue and Kimmage.
The site encompasses a recorded watercourse, DU022-003, shown on the Down Survey map of 1655 and on the First Edition of Ordnance Survey map of 1842. The next closest recorded monuments comprise a castle-unclassified (DU022-095), c. 1.1km east and a flat cemetery (DU022-002), c. 1.3km northwest. Archaeological excavation revealed the presence of a the mill building along with internal features that may be interpreted as a forge for the sharpening and manufacture/repair of knives and bladed implements. Following the excavation and detailed recording of the mill structure (including photogrammetry and laser scanning) the southern wall of the structure was removed under archaeological supervision. The exposed wall ends were then double wrapped in terram and the concrete retaining wall poured adjacent to the structure. The remnants of the structure were then backfilled and have been preserved in situ in ground that will revert to private garden following the completion of works. During ongoing monitoring works the remains of a structure were identified approximately 80m south-east of the Cutler’s Mill site. The structure comprised a set of narrow stone steps. Although no buildings are depicted on the historic maps at this portion of the alleviation scheme, the mapping depicts the confluence of the River Poddle and a mill race at this point (OS map 1843). A crossing point seems to be visible on Ordinance Survey 6-inch map 1837-1842 at this location. The steps may therefore represent the remains of a footbridge for crossing of a small tributary to the River Poddle at this point. The small scale of the steps is suggestive of a local feature as opposed to a public structure. |
