A programme of archaeological testing for a proposed new bridge at the Irish National War Memorial was undertaken in August to September 2025, and also included archaeological monitoring of enabling works. The scheme covers the Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Inchicore North townland on the south bank of the Liffey, and UCD Boat Club Islandbridge on the north side of the Liffey in Longmeadows townland. The bridge spans the river and will not involve underwater elements.

Two test-trenches were excavated in the locations of the proposed bridge abutment piles, each 2m wide and 10m long. The trench on the northern side runs from the river bank inland, whilst to the south the trench runs south from the existing river bank path. Both trenches identified deep unstratified deposits of modern material overlying natural subsoil, which was reached at 0.07m in the north and 1.5m in the south. This is consistent with geotechnical reports from ground investigations from 1978 to 2022 demonstrating made ground (including red brick) up to 3.5m in depth across the site area.

No archaeological material was encountered. Monitoring of construction groundworks for the bridge will continue into 2026.
