A number of areas of archaeological potential were identified within the site. In the case of recorded monument DU014-098, the site had been securely fenced and an exclusion zone was established. In all other areas where archaeological potential was suspected as a result of the geophysical survey (22R0149) the design of the proposed development has been altered to mitigate any potential impact on subsurface remains by using concrete pads without the need for foundations or excavation.
However, monitoring was carried out within a strip measuring 70m in length, 1.4m in width and 1.1m in depth in an area located at the northern portion of one of the areas identified previously in order to facilitate a direct bury AC Cable from the inverters to the LV Panel in the Substation. The sod and topsoil (C100) measured 0.15m in thickness and lay directly above the natural orange clay (C101). One possible cereal-drying kiln (C1) was identified at the eastern end of the cable strip which was excavated.
The kiln measured 3.2m in length, 1.2m in width and 0.3m in depth. It had gently sloping sides to a flat base. The basal layer consisted of a thin layer of black clay (C2) with occasional inclusions of charcoal and oxidised clay (C3). It measured 0.1m in thickness and lay below a layer of mid-brown clay (C4) with moderate inclusions of round stone and a deposit of grey–brown clay (C5) with occasional inclusions of stone and charcoal at the west.
