The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Conlin Road, Killybegs, County Donegal, was carried out on 15 September 2025.  The proposed development consisted of the construction of a new building to house a commercial unit on the ground floor and an apartment on the first floor. The testing was carried out as part of the planning process and was necessary as the site was located within the constraint for the historic town of Killybegs (DG097-012).

The site was located on the east side of Conlin Road and consisted of a filled area in a field of pasture which sloped steeply down from west to east. The testing consisted of the excavation of two test trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development site which was accessible, i.e. along the northern and the eastern sides of the site.  The trenches measured 17.8m and 14.9m long, 1.6-2m wide and 0.6-1.4m deep.

The pre-development testing revealed topsoil above modern fill, above the original topsoil, above natural subsoils and bedrock. A 20mm diameter water service crossed both trenches.  Only modern 20th-century materials were in evidence. Nothing of archaeological significance was found.
