Monitoring of groundworks at a development site in Cashelcraw, Carrowreagh townland, approximately 2.5km south of Carndonagh, Co. Donegal, was carried out on 20 August 2025. The project consisted of the construction of a dwelling house, domestic garage, onsite waste water treatment plant and percolation area. The monitoring was a condition of the planning permission.
The partially overgrown site contained a small pre-fabricated structure in a poor state of preservation. An almost completely overgrown, roofless, ruined dwelling was located along the southern side of the development site. No features of archaeological significance were visible within the development site, which was located approximately 30m from a cashel (RMP DG011-056).
The groundworks entailed reduction in levels for the foundations of the proposed dwelling and garage, for a driveway, wastewater treatment plant and percolation area. The stratigraphy encountered consisted of topsoil above natural subsoils, bedrock and the concrete foundation of the pre-fabricated structure.
Three modern pottery sherds, plastic and aeroboard were found in the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
