Sixteen trenches were excavated across a proposed mixed-use development site where an enclosure (approximately 42m in diameter) had been identified in a geophysical survey. The enclosure was identified in three of the four trenches that extended across it as a spread of soft loamy clay with occasional charcoal between 2m and 2.9m wide. It was investigated by hand to a depth of 0.3m, exposing gradually sloping sides. The possible outer ditch tentatively suggested in the geophysical survey was not identified. Approximately 200m to the north an isolated pit (0.75m in diameter x 0.13m deep) was identified. It was partially investigated by hand and was filled with charcoal-rich clay and broken stone. No finds were identified in the pit. If development proceeds further archaeological works will be undertaken.
