The site at News Street, Gurteenroe, Macroom, underwent an archaeological assessment. This included a geophysical survey (24R0523) of Fields 1 and 2, as well as test excavations (25E0013) of Field 1.
The geophysical survey identified the presence of an anomaly measuring 7m in diameter within Field 2, currently a play pitch. The anomaly was interpreted as a ring-ditch (ITM 533473, 572880). The report monument form has been submitted to the National Monument Service and is currently being processed. Furthermore, a mill race associated with Massytown mill (RPS 02370) forms the boundary between Fields 1 and 2.
Test trenching of Field 1 was carried out, with fourteen test trenches excavated to target anomalies identified during the geophysical survey. The trenches had a width of 1.8m and were excavated to a depth of up to 1.2m; however, on average, the natural material was exposed at a depth of 0.4-0.8m.
No features of archaeological significance were exposed in Field 1; however, agricultural furrows, a stone drain and a modern sewer pipe/drainage were uncovered.
The proposals for the site include preservation in situ of the previously unknown monument, a ring-ditch identified within the play pitch in Field 2.
