This site assessment involving the excavation of 2 test trenches in the footprint of the proposed building failed to recover any archaeological features, deposits or finds. The ground level has been reduced, there was no topsoil in the excavation/proposed development area and a concrete retaining wall has been constructed along the north-eastern boundary. The trenches were excavated through a gravel surface that directly overlay a grey marly boulder clay with stone and rock throughout. There will be no impact from development at this location as archaeological features do not survive.

The ringfort (rath CV021-063) immediately adjacent to the northeast is overgrown with trees and vegetation and lies outside the application area and site boundary. A post-and-wire fence was visible along the north-east boundary, but could not be inspected as it was above the height of the retaining wall and not accessible from the site. It may represent the fence of the buffer zone established around ringfort CV021-063 in 2012. It is recommended that no development takes place east of the retaining wall as it will extend into the buffer zone surrounding the monument.
