Archaeological monitoring using a metal detector was conducted at a site situated in Rahardrum and Virginia townlands, Co. Cavan. This was in relation to the Virginia Waste Water Treatment Plant Upgrade. The site is located to the south of County Cavan, Virginia, on the shore of Lough Ramor. It includes the existing wastewater treatment plant (within the townland of Rahardrum) and the proposed Terminal Pumping Station location (in the townland of Virginia). The site crosses the River Blackwater with an overflow outfall pipe from the wastewater treatment plant extending into Lough Ramor.

The grass and sod, which had an average thickness of 0.20m, was removed onto a mixture of gravel and clay which varied in thickness from 0.3m to 0.4m and was removed onto the natural, yellow-brown boulder clay, with stone and coarse gravel. The western section of the site had several services previously cut through it. The eastern section had not been previously disturbed. No archaeological features were identified, and no finds were recovered. There will be no archaeological impact, and no further work is recommended.
