Five test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger in advance of the construction of further development of an existing housing estate, consisting of 23 additional houses.
The site is located towards the northern end of the historic town of Cootehill, which contains a great deal of historic architectural fabric. In addition, there are a number of Recorded Monuments in the vicinity of the town, and some archaeological material was discovered during archaeological monitoring of works for modern infrastructure.
Five trenches were excavated by mechanical digger, totalling 165m x 2m of trenches. There was very deep overburden on the site, presumably deposited during earlier phases of the construction of the housing estate, making it very difficult to establish the subsoil. It contained brick, concrete and plastic.
Trench 2 was excavated to a depth of 1.3m, and contained the following soil profile:
- 0.3m of sod and topsoil;
- 0.9m of red-brown clay subsoil;
- 0.1m of grey sand.
No material of an archaeological nature, finds or features was observed in any of the trenches.
