Test excavation was undertaken on 28 October 2025 at Coolnapish, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow. Following completion of the test trenching, upcast spoil from the trenches was spread out by the machine and scanned with a metal detector under consent to the NMS. The base of the trenches were also scanned. (Detection Licence 25R0458).
Geophysical survey was undertaken at the site by Earthsound Geophysics on 29 July 2025 under consent 25R0275. Trenches were placed to investigate geophysical anomalies.
The natural glacial deposit consisted of loose mid-brown and mid-brown/orange gravels sitting on a compact tan brown gravelly clay. These natural layers were overlain by 0.15–0.45m sod and topsoil. No archaeological features were recorded in the course of test excavation.
