An archaeological assessment (test trenching) was carried out at a site located at Ballyguile Road, Ballyguile Beg, Co. Wicklow. The site lies to the southwest of Wicklow, adjacent to and east of
Ballyguile Road and is bounded by residential developments, dwellings and a field.
A total of 9 test trenches (Trenches 1 – 9) and two areas (Area A and B) were excavated. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total 523m of linear trenches were excavated; the total area stripped measured 982 m2. Test trenches and the area stripped were excavated to a depth of between 0.25m to 0.4m, exposing mid-orangey-brown clayey silt with stone shale deposits natural subsoil. Spoil from excavated test trenches was examined for finds visually. The material removed included dark greyish-brown loose silty sand topsoil. Land drains were recorded in Test Trenches 3 – 5.
No archaeological features were exposed, and no finds were retrieved.
