Archaeological monitoring during the groundworks at Brennan’s Lane revealed no features or finds of archaeological significance. While no archaeology was exposed during this phase of works, the presence of undisturbed natural subsoil at the junction of Brennan’s Lane and South Street during monitoring of engineering test pits in 2023 suggests that archaeological features may survive at relatively shallow depths beneath the road surface, within the medieval core of New Ross.

Natural subsoil was encountered at a depth of 0.45m below present ground level near South Street, while bedrock was exposed at shallower depths ranging from 0.1m to 0.55m further east, as the ground level rises. Across all monitored areas—including service trenches, paving zones, and locations of repointing and scrub clearance—the stratigraphy consisted of modern materials such as tarmac, rubble, and mixed silty clays with occasional modern debris. In several locations, bedrock was found directly beneath these modern overburden layers.

Due to the shallow nature of the excavations, only modern surface deposits were removed, and no intact archaeological horizons or features were identified.
