Archaeological test excaavtion followed archaeological impact assessment and geophysical survey of expansion of a commercial premises. The development consists of the demolition of existing shed and erection of an office building (212.21 sq. metres) 2. erection of extensions to existing warehouse (700.29 sq. metres) and truck garage (226.41 sq. metres), 3. provision of a new truck parking area with new entrance, and associated works (including the installation of a new sewage treatment system and surface water attenuation system).
A total of four trenches were opened in accordance with the layout recommended in the method statement issued on 15th April 2024. The trenches were laid out to achieve a clear view of the surface of subsoils within the proposed footprint of construction works to establish the presence or absence of archaeological features including cuts, fills, deposits, spreads, and structures.
The site is on relatively level land in the upper yard area and slopes gradually down to the southwest. The topsoil overburden was comparatively thick and varied from 0.3 to 0.5m throughout the areas exposed. Topsoil consisted of dark grey/brown sandy-silt with frequent subangular inclusions of sandstone derived cobbles, pebbles, gravels and grits.
Just one area of disturbance was identified and this consisted of a probable relict field boundary that was identified during geophysical investigations.
