Archaeological monitoring took place of Phase 1 conservation repairs to the ruins of Ballycogly Castle, Co. Wexford. The works were commissioned by Wexford County Council and grant aid was provided by the Communities Monuments Fund, in partnership with Wexford County Council (CMF24-1-2 WX004).
Ballycogly Castle, which is classified as a tower-house, is a Recorded Monument (WX047-019001). The castle suffered a substantial collapse in February 2024 and this has left the building structurally unstable. This collapse damaged surrounding buildings/sheds and covered a lawn area in rubble. The castle is currently in a perilous state and further collapse is likely without timely intervention. Due to its proximity to a dwelling house there is a real and immediate health and safety danger if no remedial action is taken.
The purpose of the works at Ballycogly castle is to secure the surviving historic masonry for the long-term. It is currently in poor condition and will continue to deteriorate without intervention. The proposed works were structural and Phase 2 will be completed in 2025 subject to a successful grant application.
