Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) were engaged to carry out archaeological testing in advance of construction in Townparks townland (St John’s Parish), County Wexford.
Archaeological testing by hand was undertaken between 17 and 18 April 2024. Work included the excavation of four test trenches, inside and outside the existing property at the proposed development site. The results revealed the remains of an earlier — probably original early nineteenth-century annex wall and cobbled yard surface to the rear of the development. The annex was demolished in the twentieth century but is depicted as on the early 1881 Town Plan map. In addition, testing inside the existing house revealed the structure was built directly on bedrock with a minimum of foundation deposits.
Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed during this round of testing and therefore no
further archaeological excavation is recommended at this site.
