Permission is being sought for a large-scale residential development consisting of the construction of 141 residential units and associated works on a predominantly green field site in the townland of Ballinderry, off the Ardmore Road, some 1.3km southeast of Mullingar town centre, Co. Westmeath. Under section 247 of the Planning & Development Act 2000, a stage 1 meeting was convened in February 2024, in the course of which it was noted by the planners, in consideration of Heritage matters, that while there were no recorded monuments on site, it was suggested that the developer may be asked by the Development Applications Unit of the Department to provide an archaeological impact assessment. In anticipation of this, the developer commissioned Archaeology & Heritage Consultancy Ltd to prepare an assessment, to include pre-development archaeological testing of the proposed development area.
The site was tested via a series of 21 machine-dug trenches of varying lengths, but spaced at roughly 10m intervals across the footprint of the development, access roads and service lines.
Nothing of interest was uncovered apart from an area of modern reclaimed ground as well as a number of agricultural field boundaries all of which were recorded on Ordinance Survey maps and aerial photographs as late as 2022.
