Full time archaeological monitoring was undertaken, on 29 and 30 October 2024, of works relating to a gas pipeline connecting to existing gas mains pipework, and the laying of approx. 35m of 125PE 75mbar main, at Connolly Street, Athlone. The location is within an urban environment which mainly consists of buildings and artificial surfaces. The works took place within the Zone of Notification for the Historic Town of Athlone (WM029-042--).
The pipeline route was excavated from the southeast to the northwest along Connolly Street connecting to an existing gas mains running along Barrack Street. The works were all open cut and extended to approx. 600mm deep x 500mm wide. The stratigraphy was consistent throughout consisting of Tarmac overlying a compact gravel layer. There were frequent services encountered, and a pre-existing water pipe ran parallel to the gas pipeline route in the eastern edge of the trench. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
