An Archaeological Assessment (test trenching) was conducted at Castletown – Geoghegan, Mullingar, Co Westmeath on 18 January 2024. The assessment was carried out in response to a further information request by Westmeath County Council in relation to a proposed childcare facility and associated works.
The site contains no Recorded Monuments as listed in the Record of Monuments and Places nor Protected Structures as listed within the Westmeath County Development Plan 2021-2027. However, the site is considered to have archaeological potential due to its location in the Zone of Archaeological Potential associated with an ecclesiastical enclosure (WM032-014004----), with a chapel (WM032-014001----), a graveyard (WM032-014002---- that is also Protected Structure PRS ID. 032-010) and a church (WM032-014003----) and are all located on the opposite side of the road from the site.
A total of three test trenches were excavated. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total, 38m of linear trenches were excavated. The trenches were positioned across the site and within the footprint of the proposed development. The ground level was between 0.7-0.9m above the natural subsoil.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed, and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete, and no further mitigation is necessary.
