The site is located in the townland of Ballinroad, some 2.5km northeast of the town of Dungarven, Co Waterford. Permission is being sought to develop a housing scheme on the greenfield site, which is located some 160m northeast of a site of archaeological interest.
In their response to the planning application, the local authority requested further information in the form of an archaeological impact assessment, the first element of which was a geophysical survey, which was carried out in April 2024 under license 24R0226. Nothing of certain archaeological interest was revealed in the survey.
It was therefore proposed to undertake testing the site via a series of 10 machine-dug trenches spaced at roughly 10m intervals across the footprint of the development, access roads and service lines.
Nothing of archaeological interest was noted in any of the archaeological test trenches.
