Archaeological monitoring of demolition and site clearance and archaeological testing associated with the construction of a hotel at 12 Main Street, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, was undertaken to fulfil a planning condition. 12 Main Street, Dungarvan, is in the townland and parish of Dungarvan and barony of Decies without Drum. The site is located west of the historic walled town of Dungarvan. The building is listed on the current Waterford City and County Council Plan 2022 – 2028 as a protected structure (RPS ref. no. DV740028). It is also listed by the NIAH as being significant (NIAH ref. no. 22821120). It is a mid-nineteenth-century terraced building. A carriage archway in the front elevation leads to adjacent (rear) outbuildings and an open yard. The outbuildings were demolished during the first phase of site works.
Ground level within the area of the old outbuilding (and the new extension) was reduced incrementally by a machine using a flat bucket under the direction of the archaeologist to a depth of 0.4-0.6m. It was decided to take this approach due to the narrow width of the site and the size of the machine. In this way the full extent of the layers below the floor levels of the outbuildings were revealed and could be recorded more accurately.
No archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts were recorded while monitoring demolition works and reduction of ground to the rear of No. 12 Main Street, Dungarvan. The layers which underlay the floor levels of the outbuildings in the area of the new extension were modern in date.
