Ground works associated with the construction of a public carpark at Church Street and Old Church Street, Cahir was monitored as part of granted planning permission. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Cahir, close to its northern edge. The project entails two phases: Phase 1 entailed removal of trees and scrub, the demolition of the former hotel building on the site and sub-surface ground works. Phase 2, likely to be undertaken in 2025, will entail opening of a pedestrian link through the adjacent Market House Building, surface dressing the new carpark, drainage, connection to services, landscaping works, etc.
Phase 1 undertaken in 2024 entailed the removal of trees, clearance of vegetation, the demolishing of the former hotel and outbuildings and topsoil stripping/site reduction of the site. Other than modern debris and rubbish, nothing was revealed during the topsoil strip and site reduction works. No archaeological remains and/or features were uncovered in the course of monitoring the ground works.
