Archaeological monitoring took place of Uisce Éireann upsizing of existing 2” main (and any associated assets required) and transfer existing service connections on Rock Villas and Rock Lane.

Monitoring of the main tranche of works took place between 29 January 2023 and 15 April 2024 (Gregory, September 2024). As part of these works the most recent tranche entailed archaeological monitoring of leakage resolution works at the Kiln, Cashel. The works consist of mechanical excavation of the mains to open up limited sections of the road, in which water mains leaks were identified, and to repair the mains.

The works involved excavation of two slit trenches to access the existing water mains.

The first, situated at ITM 607668 640984, was excavated on the footpath and road verge on the west side of the Kiln. The footpath section (2m east-west x 0.4m, Depth 0.7m) presented a stratigraphy of 0.1m concrete; onto 0.1m grey brown silt; onto slig (natural bedrock) for remainder with services in upper section. The westernmost portion had 0.4m of yellow brown silt beneath the 0.1m grey brown silt. The road section (1.4m north-south x 0.6m, Depth 0.8m) had a stratigraphy of 0.2m tarmac onto stone chip fill with services for remainder.

The second hole at ITM 607626 641048 was entirely on the footpath on the west side of the Kiln. It measured 2m east-west x 0.8m and was up to 0.8m in depth. Its stratigraphy consisted of 0.1m concrete onto 0.15m gravel and stone bedding; onto yellow grey to orange silty sand for remainder (natural subsoil).

Both slit trenches were truncated by services.
