Archaeological monitoring was undertaken, between 7 July and 12 September 2024, of groundworks at Abbey Street Performance Area, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. The site is within the boundary of TS083-019, Historic town of Clonmel.
Three trenches, an ESB ducting trench and two foundation trenches, were excavated across the width of the site, aligned east-west and measuring on average 1.2-2m wide x 0.8 -1.2m deep. In all trenches modern rubble, stone and mortar fill was encountered immediately below the tarmac. Remnants of 19th-century walls related to the extant walls along the western boundary of the site were encountered. All walls were removed along the length of the trenches. Excavations also took place along the west/north-west corner of the site in the location of the proposed stage area. Modern rubble was again immediately encountered in this location. Modern pottery was encountered within the rubble at the base of all the trenches and excavated areas.
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of monitoring. No further works are required.
