Targeted archaeological testing was undertaken within a permitted solar farm development to establish whether anomalies identified during a geophysical survey were archaeological and, if so, the nature, extent, and character of any remains.
Test excavations revealed a single feature of archaeological significance: the remains of a probable cereal-drying kiln, C12, in Trench 8. The oval feature measured 1.9m north-south. It extended out of the trench to the west but was exposed for 1.2m east-west. A sondage revealed that it had steeply sloping or concave sides and a concave base to a depth of 0.54m. It was filled with a friable dark brown silty clay with occasional charcoal and burnt clay inclusions. Upon inspection, charred barley grains could be discerned in the fill. This would indicate that the pit feature is likely the remains of a cereal-drying kiln. A similar pit-like anomaly with the same geophysical 'read’ was located approximately 3m to the east of the kiln, and it is possible that this may also be a kiln feature.
It was recommended that the kiln and pit-like anomaly adjacent to it be preserved by record and subject to full archaeological excavation.
