A programme of archaeological monitoring of groundworks to facilitate the erection of a 24m high lattice tower together with antennas, dishes and associated telecommunications equipment all enclosed in security fencing and a proposed turning area at Knigh, Puckaun, Co. Tipperary was undertaken. The site is just outside the Zone of Notification for TN014-027---, an enclosure.
The site is located on a north-east facing hillside in use as pasture. There are expansive views to the northeast and south. The northern side of the site is bordered by a fence line separating it from a modern agricultural building.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on 30 January 2024 in dry and sunny conditions. An area measuring roughly 16m x 16m was stripped to underlying natural undisturbed deposits. The stratigraphy comprised a mid-brown topsoil and sod directly overlying bedrock at a depth of roughly 250mm throughout. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. No further archaeological mitigation is required.
