Monitoring of groundworks in Drumcliff South townland in County Sligo was carried out on 24 October 2024. The project consisted of the location of a leak(s) along two sections of the Drum East Group Water Scheme pipeline and its repair.  The monitoring was necessary as the pipeline was located within the constraint for the Drumcliff ecclesiastical site (RMP SL008-084).

The relevant section of the pipeline was located in a field of pasture on the south-west side of the N15, Sligo-Bundoran road. No archaeological features were visible along the route of the pipeline.  Nine test pits were excavated by a mini-digger along the line/route of the pipeline, in order to locate the source of the leak(s). The pipeline measured 20mm in diameter and was located between 0.1m and 0.35m below the surface within the test pits.

The test pits measured 1.9-7m long, 1-1.6m wide and 0.25-0.55m deep. The stratigraphy encountered during the monitoring of groundworks consisted of topsoil above natural subsoil. No artefacts were recovered. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence. The leak was identified and repaired.
