Archaeological testing was carried out by Fadó Archaeology at Cornageeha, Pearse Road, Sligo, Co. Sligo. The greenfield site has an overall size of approximately 4 hectares. There are several recorded monuments in the wider vicinity, but none within or close to the proposed development area. No finds or features of archaeological significance were noted during the site inspection on 19 February 2024 of the two fields that form the proposed development. Because the site was a greenfield site 4 hectares in size, it was recommended that it subject to a full programme of archaeological testing to investigate and identify any subsurface archaeological material that may be present. A programme of archaeological test trenching scheme should target any potential archaeological features identified in the Geophysical Survey conducted previously in 2008.
Testing took place over the course of four days (25-29 March 2024) during which 26 test trenches were excavated. In Field 2 a ditch was identified in Test Trenches 21-23, which appears to be a linear ditch of possible archaeological potential, though it was not present on the geophysical survey. It is recommended that the possible archaeological feature will need to be further investigated, if indeed it is archaeological, provision should be made for full excavation of this feature should preservation in situ not be an option.
No further material of an archaeological nature or of archaeological potential was identified.
