The proposed development site comprises a small plot west of Ballisodare town. The proposed development will comprise the construction of an extension to a dwelling house and all associated works on an elevated site in Abbeytown townland, adjacent to the N59 Sligo to Ballina Road.
There are several recorded monuments in the wider area of the subject site. Within the immediate vicinity is RMP SL020-159----Ringfort rath. This monument will not be directly impacted on either physically or visually by the proposed development at Abbeytown.
The proposed development area is within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for RMP SL020-159----Ringfort rath. Due to the proximity of the proposed development to SL020-159---, it was recommended in the Archaeological Impact Assessment Report completed by the author, that archaeological monitoring be conducted during the groundworks, including topsoil stripping, associated with the proposed development.
Monitoring took place on 17 June 2024. The work was carried out by a mechanical excavator under strict archaeological supervision. During monitoring the topsoil was stripped across the entire development site. No archaeological deposits, features or objects were encountered.
