A programme of archaeological testing was carried out by Fadó Archaeology at Attirory, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim on behalf of Leitrim County Council. The purpose of the proposed development is to provide for a pedestrian path from housing development Glas an Abhainn and linking with Attirory crossroads and the other pedestrian paths in that area. The proposed development is within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for RMP LE031-039-039003 – Church, Burial Ground & Ecclesiastical Enclosure. The trajectory of the enclosure appears to extend into the southern portion of the proposed development area. Leitrim County Council engaged an archaeologist to carry out a thorough archaeological assessment of the site, to include licenced testing and a review of desktop sources to inform the proposal for a footpath at the location as outlined in this report.
On 13 March 2024, test trenching was undertaken. Two test trenches were excavated across the proposed development site. During testing, material of potential archaeological nature was noted in both test trenches.
