The scheme involved the installation of c.3,203m of rehabilitated water mains along existing roads (R287, crosses the N4 Collooney to Sligo dual carriageway, Oakfield Road (L3601)). The
installation methods used were slip-lining and open-cut trenching. Excavation of several access pits to facilitate the directional drilling installation method were monitored under continuous supervision in order to identify any subsurface archaeological objects, features or deposits that may have been present. The monitoring followed a high-level Cultural Heritage Screening Report (CHSR) undertaken for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) in November 2022. The CHSR found that the schemes would not impact any Recorded Monuments or sites listed on the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR). However, the report recommended monitoring of the westernmost 1,350m of the scheme owing to the high potential for archaeological remains in this area as evidenced by the Carrowmore Passage Tomb Cemetery (National Monument No. 153) located to the west of the scheme and due to the presence of other surrounding monuments. Monitoring was also recommended due to the scheme’s proposed location in the vicinity of two water bodies (CH01 and CH02), a stream/townland boundary (CH03) and a possible culvert (CH09) and, as a precaution, at the location of an old corn mill (site of; CH04), a mill pond (site of; CH05) and a double stream (site of; CH19). The archaeological monitoring was carried out intermittently by Patrick Walsh, Zbigniew Malek, Alan Healy and Niall Jones of AMS between 3 November 2023 and 1 May 2024 under licence 23E0843 issued to Patrick Walsh by the National Monuments Service (NMS).
No potential archaeological objects, features and deposits were found during the monitoring of the Carraroe National School to Grange East Reservoir, scheme’s route.
