Archaeological monitoring of geotechnical site investigations at the site of a consented development at Mount Lucas Wind Farm, Co. Offaly, was undertaken on 16 and 17 October 2024. An Archaeological Impact Assessment at the site was previously undertaken by Miriam Carroll (License 22E0921) in 2023. Four test trenches were excavated as part of the assessment. No archaeological features were uncovered in any of the trenches excavated.
A total of 9 test pits were excavated at the site as part of the geotechnical site investigations. The test pits were located on the former compound area or immediately surrounding it and generally measured 4-5m in length, c. 1.8m in width and up to 4m in depth. The stratigraphy indicated that in the cutaway bog areas peat survived to a maximum depth of 0.6m. Elsewhere stone fill overlay natural layers. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered in any of the trenches excavated.
