Unlicensed archaeological monitoring was carried out between 26 and 28 November 2024 in relation to groundworks associated with the upgrade of a football playing pitch at Enfield Celtic Football Club, Dublin Road, Johnstown, Enfield, Co. Meath.
Works began with the excavation of a trial pit in the north-west corner of the site. This was done in order to gauge the depth of any potential archaeological deposits or natural subsoil. The topsoil was composed of a mid-brown, humified, organic layer that varied in depth between 0.1–0.2m and was deepest to the northern portion of the site. An imported layer of bright yellowish-brown clay, into which the current drainage system was installed, covered the site. This layer had a depth of 0.45m. Where the natural subsoil was encountered, this consisted of a mottled mid-orange-brown to mid-grey clay.
Following the excavation of the trial pit, the topsoil was to be mechanically removed from within the footprint of the development area to a depth of 0.25m.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were identified during the monitored groundworks.
