Archaeological test trenching was carried out in April 2024 on a site at Cogan Street and Cavan Street in Oldcastle, Co. Meath. The testing was part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment for a proposed development at the site.
A total of 11 trenches were excavated across the site for a total length of 320m. Six originally planned trenches could not be excavated due to modern obstacles (mounds of gravel, tarmacked trackways and a yard) and mature vegetation. The topsoil on the site was a mix of dark brown peat and mid-greyish-brown silt clay. The base natural in the trenches was a mix of peat, a compact mid-yellowish grey and grey clay and a mid-brownish grey silt clay.
Several ceramic land drains were found in many of the trenches. The natural soil on the site was damp in places, hence the need for drainage. One area of the site beside Cavan Street contained made-up ground to a depth of at least 2m. A modern north-to-south running linear feature was found in the north-west corner of the site. The fill contained modern ceramic, brick and metal wire.
No archaeological features or artefacts were found on the site
