Archaeological monitoring took place during groundworks in advance of construction at Pitcher Lane, Kells, Co Meath. Test excavation was undertaken in July 2023. Three trenches were excavated and nothing of archaeological significance was recorded. Monitoring of topsoil stripping and ground works took place in July and August 2024 under an extension to the original licence.
Topsoil and rubble was removed from the entire area of the development. Particular attention was paid to the north-east corner of the site could not be tested due to constraint. Topsoil varied in depth between 0.3m and 0.6m. The topsoil was overlying natural subsoil of light yellowish-gray silty clay. The site partly straddles an erased section of the Townparks (Kells) and Archdeaconry Glebe townland boundary in the north-east corner. No evidence of the townland boundary was noted in this area during these works.
