Archaeological testing was carried out at Moynalvy, Co. Meath. The site is located within a working farmyard, surrounded by arable fields. The site is accessed by a gravel trackway off the main road, which is 300m to the south and is in close proximity to a moated site (ME043-024) which was identified using aerial photography in 1966.
Three linear test trenches were excavated measuring a total distance of 180.47 linear meters.
Trench 1 was located in a gravel covered area, and no topsoil was present. In Trenches 2 and 3, the topsoil consisted of a mid-brown loose soil, which lay above a mid- to light yellowish-brown clay natural with occasional mid-bluish-grey patches.
Test trenching at the site did not identify any archaeological deposits or features and no artefacts or samples were recovered. Three possible features, an irregular spread and two northwest/southeast linear features, were investigated and found to be root scarring in the case of the spread and modern agricultural features in the case of the linear features.
Despite the proximity of the moated site (ME043-024), no evidence for this was identified during archaeological investigations on site.
As no archaeological material was identified, there will be no archaeological impact by the proposed development. Therefore, no further archaeological mitigation is required.
