Test excavation was undertaken on 25 March 2024. Seven test trenches were excavated across the site, totalling 497 linear metres. Trenches were placed to target anomalies recorded in the course of the geophysical survey (24R0016).
Across the site topsoil was recorded as humic light brown silty clay. Topsoil is deeper and more friable in the pitch area located to the south of the existing school. The underlying subsoil comprises heavy boulder clay in the area west of the school and lighter silty clay with occasional stones in the area south of the school.
There were no features, archaeological or otherwise noted within excavated trenches. A possible historical feature suggested by geophysical survey was indiscernible. A minute amount of animal bone was noted within the topsoil.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered in the course of the works.
