Archaeological test trenching was carried out in relation to a proposed residential development at New Lane, Abbeylands, Navan, Co. Meath. The site is located outside the Notification Zones of Navan Historic Town (ME025-044----) and the Religious House – Augustinian Canons (ME025-024----), both of which are on the opposite, south side of the River Blackwater, to the south/southwest of the site. The site does contain a Protected Structure, a dwelling house (RPS NT025-108) listed in the Meath County Development Plan 2021–2027 and in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH Reg. No. 14006059), which is located within the very south-east corner of the site.
A total of five test trenches were excavated. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total, 102m of linear trenches were excavated. No archaeological features or deposits were observed or exposed within Trenches 1–5, with modern deposition of redeposited clay and rubbish observed in Trench 5. The proposed development will therefore have no impact and no further work was recommended.
