A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken to facilitate ground investigation (GI) works associated with a proposed 110kV Network Programme, at multiple locations in counties Mayo and Roscommon.
All groundworks (including GI) outside of existing road carriageways or within the Zone of Notification for any RMPs were to be subject to archaeological monitoring.
GI works within the Zone of Notification for MA049-077--- were subject to archaeological monitoring under licence, in accordance with the submitted method statement.
Archaeological Monitoring of a Pavement Core with Dynamic Sample was undertaken within the south-eastern quadrant of the Zone of Notification for MA049-077----. Due to the nature of the GI, extraction of the core could not be observed directly, and only the recovered soils could be examined on site for archaeological indicators. The core was extracted from below the public road and cut to a depth of 2.25m below the road surface. The material recovered comprised a loose, greyish-brown sandy, silty, gravel. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified from the recovered soils.
