The Uisce Éireann’s (UÉ) Wastewater Network Programme (WwNP) Kiltimagh Rehab Gravity is located in Kiltimagh and Gortgarve townlands, County Mayo. The WwNP entails rehabilitation works across the existing network, new development water and wastewater connections, and upgrade works at Wastewater Pumping Stations and Wastewater Treatment Plants. The scheme involved the installation
of c.248m of replacement gravity sewer, which was located offset from the existing sewer, along three pasture fields. The installation method used was open-cut trenching.
The monitoring followed a high-level Cultural Heritage Screening Assessments (CHSA) undertaken for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions in January 2024. The CHSA found that the proposed scheme route would not impact the Zone of Notification or Zone of Archaeological Potential for any Recorded Monument, or site listed on the Sites and Monuments Record.
Following consultation with the UÉ Project Archaeologist and National Monuments Service, archaeological monitoring was recommended as a precaution along the scheme’s length.
Excavation of four trial holes, topsoil stripping and a section of a continuous open-cut trench along the scheme were monitored between 5 June and 4 July 2024. No potential archaeological objects, features, deposits or human remains were found during the monitoring of the scheme route.
