Three trenches (33m of linear trenches in total) were excavated. Due to high walls on either side of the trenches and lack of room for spoil, the trench width was reduced to 1m. Trench 1 was not excavated down to natural, at the eastern end, due to lack of room for spoil and the discovery of a pipe within concrete on the southern side of the trench. The topsoil on site was mainly a dark blackish-brown silty clay with rubbish inclusions, and the natural was an orangish brown boulder clay. Cobbles were found in all three trenches and likely associated with buildings depicted on the 6-inch 1837 OS map.
There was no archaeology recorded in the trenches and where it could not be reached in Trench 1, it would be very unlikely that any archaeological deposits would have survived if they ever existed. The proposed development will not impact any archaeology; therefore, no further mitigation works are required.
