Archaeological testing was carried out at Manulla sporting club CLG which was required by the local planning authority (planning permission) to upgrade works at Carrowntober, Manulla, Castlebar, Co Mayo. The works include the construction of a new pitch, car park including an area to the northeast and south to be retained as a habitat. Consultation has taken place between the Applicant and the Senior Archaeologist from the planning department in Mayo County Council. The topsoil varied from
0.48-1.5m deep. Peat was found in the northeast of the site with a sandy clay topsoil on the higher ground. The natural varied from an orange compacted stony subsoil to a greyer compacted natural boulder clay. Nothing of archaeological interest was found during the testing.
