A cultural heritage impact assessment and archaeological testing were carried out of a proposed biogas facility at Cappacurry, near Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. The proposed development is located on a roughly 3.8ha greenfield site.

The site is c. 2.6km to the northeast of Ballinrobe town and comprises gently undulating greenfield bordered by vernacular stone walls, hedgerow and fencing with existing agricultural facilities to the northwest situated in a flat, low-lying pasture landscape. The river Robe runs north-south to the west of the site.

There are no monuments recorded by the National Monuments Service within the boundary of the subject site. The nearest monument, a Crannóg (MA118-008----) is located c. 450m to the south of the site. There are no other features of cultural heritage significance in the immediate vicinity. The nearest NIAH site (also RPS Site No. 0060) is Cloonnagashel House (NIAH No. 31311009) which is located 1.4km to the east.

A programme of archaeological testing was carried out on 29 March 2024.

The stratigraphy encountered was consistent throughout and comprised topsoil and sod extending to a depth of between 200 and 300mm overlying a mid-brown to yellowish underlying natural subsoil with frequent inclusions of angular medium-sized stones. Occasional outcrops of limestone bedrock and bands of a natural sandy gravel were observed. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
