The site at Thunder Hill, Termonfeckin, Co. Louth, was archaeologically assessed and involved the excavation of four trenches, each measuring 1.4m in width with a total of 45m of linear trenches excavated, and positioned to assess the archaeological potential across the site within areas of proposed development. Excavation of the trenches failed to identify any archaeological features or finds.
Stone rubble with red brick was evident at the east of the site, most likely representing demolition material from a cottage that previously stood on the site. The subsoil was exposed in all trenches below the sod and topsoil at depths varying between 0.25m and 0.6m. It varied from brown, grey sandy gravel at the east of
the site to yellow or orange boulder clay elsewhere. No archaeological features or deposits were identified within the excavated trenches and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete, and no further mitigation is necessary.
