The purpose of the monitoring was to relocate three cellars/undercrofts (LI005-017148) uncovered and investigated during archaeological testing and subsequent partial excavation (00E0635) and to survey these features with a GPS within the area proposed for development.
The three cellars/undercrofts were relocated and several additional associated features not previously recorded were also uncovered and recorded.
The top of the walls of the cellars/undercrofts ranged from 0.3m to c. 1.8m below current ground surface. In addition to this, the condition and height of the walls varied considerably throughout the site, influencing its depth below the surface. For instance, the remains of the internal wall of undercroft 1/2 survived higher at the north-west than the south-east end. At the south-east end, the top of the wall was 1.8m below the surface level while it was 0.53m below surface level at the north-west end. An architectural stone fragment from the backfilled material (24E0793:002:001) was the only artefact retrieved from the archaeological monitoring.
